Inquiry Based Learning
Inquiry-based learning is a research-based strategy that actively involves students in the exploration of the content, issues, and questions surrounding a curricular area or concept. The activities and assignments in an IBL classroom can be designed such that students work individually or together to solve problems involving both in-class work and fieldwork. While the strategy is meant to be highly student-focused, the extent of teacher-directed vs. student-directed learning can vary depending on the level of the students in your course and their understanding of the inquiry process.
Higher-Order Thinking Skills
Higher-order thinking, known as higher order thinking skills (HOTS), is a concept of education reform based on learning taxonomies (such as Bloom’s taxonomy). The idea is that some types of learning require more cognitive processing than others, but also have more generalized benefits. In Bloom’s taxonomy, for example, skills involving analysis, evaluation and creation are thought to be of a higher order, requiring different learning and teaching methods than the learning of facts and concepts.
In PEEP, HOTS is integrated into the language acquisition process. We believe that students must be able to ‘think’ and ‘process’ knowledge in their second language in order to actually ‘acquire’ the language. Furthermore, HOTS play a large part in the all-round growth of children.
Interdisciplinary Skills Fostering
Interdisciplinary teaching involves exploring content or solving a problem by integrating more than one academic subject while learning English. Pinewoods Education believes this is a holistic approach to education; to create an more integrated, enhanced learning experience for English language acquiring students.
Student Assessment
Exhibition
The term exhibition refers to projects, presentations, or products through which students “exhibit” what they have learned, usually as a way of demonstrating whether and to what degree they have achieved expected learning standards or learning objectives. An exhibition is typically both a learning experience in itself and a means of evaluating academic progress and achievement.
Parents-teacher-child conference
A parent-teacher conference is a meeting between a student’s parents and teacher or teachers, to discuss the child’s progress academically, socially and with regard to expected classroom behaviour.
Other topics, such as homework, emotional challenges, or issues with friends, may also come up.
Children Portfolio
To accurately monitor children‟s progress towards the acquisition of skills, knowledge and language, and to ensure that our curriculum is supporting optimum learning and to ensure accountability as educators, PEEP supports the use of portfolios to assess and monitor children‟s learning and to make their learning „visible‟ to others. Portfolios are purposeful collections of children‟s work e.g. work samples, photographic documentation, comments and conversations. As we study these examples of children‟s writing, drawing, thinking and social interaction, we can assess and monitor their development against our learning goals.
